Leaf Them Alone

Leaf Them Alone

WHEN YOU’RE LOCKED IN a tower because you fear revenge from the family of someone you (or a relative) killed, you learn to entertain yourself in other ways - like turning leaves into instruments!

More on Kanun, the Albanian tradition of revenge killings, in the next installment, but for now, I’d like to share this special version of mountain entertainment.

First, we get a tutorial from a seasoned pro.

Watching a man play a leaf like an instrument in a lock-in tower in Albania. This tower has acted as a sanctuary for family members fearful of a blood feud, or "Kanun", the Albanian tradition of a revenge killing that is still practiced today.

Totally inspired, Hugo (Netherlands), Fernando, and Emanuele (Italy) give it a shot.

Trying out their newly-learned leaf playing skills in the Accursed Mountains of Albania.

While the concept IS compelling, this international boy band has no legs. Sorry, guys.

VERDICT: Mostly Harmless - but it tickles the lips and can leave you light-headed.
